Holy Week 2013
Palm Sunday, March 24. Services at 8:30 am and 10:45 am
Maundy Thursday, March 28. Agape Service with light meal at 6:30 pm. Parish Hall
When the church worships on Maundy Thursday, it remembers the last evening Christ spent with His disciples in the upper room. Maundy Thursday begins with an "agape" (Greek work for communal love) meal followed by the Holy Eucharist in the Parish Hall. The agape meal is modeled after the early church practice of sharing a common meal before the Eucharist. After the Eucharist, we will make a solemn procession up to Nave for the stripping of the altar. The service will end with the Gethsemane Reading and Arrest of Jesus.
Good Friday Tenebrae Service, March 29 at 7:00 pm
On Good Friday we gather at the cross to remember Jesus' sorrow and give thanks. Tenebrae, meaning "darkness" or "shadows," has been practiced by the church since medieval times. Once a service for the monastic community, Tenebrae later became an important part of common worship during Holy Week. We join Christians of many generations throughout the world in using the liturgy of Tenebrae. Tenebrae is a prolonged meditation on Christ's suffering. Readings trace the story of Christ's passion, music portrays His pathos, and the power of silence and darkness suggests the drama of this momentous event.
